Eating Bread at Night May Help You Remember Your Dreams

An interesting new study shows that eating bread and other foods that contain Vitamin B6 before bed might help people to better recall their dreams. That’s right! The new study, published in a scientific journal called the “Journal of Perpetual and Motor Skills,” showed that people who consumed B6 before bed were better able than before to remember their dreams the following day.

The randomized double-blind study was conducted by the University of Adelaide in Australia and included 100 participants who took high doses of Vitamin B6 before going to sleep at night for five nights in a row. Dr. Denholm Aspy of the University’s School of Psychology led the research. On the university’s website, he said: “Our results show that taking vitamin B6 improved people’s ability to recall dreams compared to a placebo.”  

“The average person spends about six years dreaming. If we were able to become more lucid and control our dreams, we can then use our dreaming time more productively,” he added. “In order to have lucid dreams it is very important to first be able to recall dreams on a regular basis.”  

The B6 is only believed to affect dream recall, and not the actual dream content. For example, it won’t make your dreams more bizarre or colorful. The vitamin intake also did not seem to have any other effects on sleep patterns. “Further research is needed to investigate whether the effects of vitamin B6 vary according to how much is obtained from the diet,” Aspy said.


You Can Get B6 by Eating Bread and Other Foods

B6 is a water-soluble vitamin, also called pyridoxine, that occurs naturally in many foods. The vitamin plays a key role in many of the chemical reactions in the body and in metabolizing food. It also aids in the formation of red blood cells.  

Whole grain foods like bread are an especially good source of Vitamin B6. That is because they have a high concentration of the vitamin. Wheat germ, for example, contains about three milligrams of B6 per 100 grams.  

Other foods that naturally contain B6 include legumes, fruits like bananas, vegetables such as spinach and potatoes, milk, cheese, eggs, red meat, liver, and fish.
